Submit Your Work to the “Askews” Short Film Contest

Published March 7, 2019

Alternative programming celebrates some of the most underrated and underseen talent on the big screen. In honor of awards season, we want to highlight the newest FSU student voices in cinema. We want to see your vision come to life. We want to engage with your creative voice.

This spring, we’re hosting the first ever “Askews” Short Film Contest, hosted by the Askew Student Life Center. Before a screening of The Favourite on April 5, 2019 at 7:15 pm, we will show the top 5 contenders for the golden Askew statue. After the screening of our feature film, we will announce the 1st and 2nd place winners. In addition to the golden Askew, the 1st and 2nd place winners will receive a Red Couch Treatment certificate.

Submissions for the contest will be accepted from now until March 31st, 2019

Rules and Guidelines:

  • You must be a currently-enrolled FSU student to participate.
  • Your film may be no longer than 5 minutes, excluding credits.
  • You may not use copyrighted music.
  • Your story/script must be your original work.
  • You must obtain signed permission from your actors for their voices and likeness to be shown in a public setting, for the use of locations, and for the use of music. You can find these release forms here.
  • You may use any camera of your choosing.
  • Upload your finished film to Youtube or Vimeo and publish it as a private video. If you use Vimeo, make sure your film can be downloaded.
  • Submissions will only be accepted if they are sent from an FSU email. They must be sent to SLCAlternative@admin.fsu.edu and must include in the subject line: The Askews Short Film Contest 2019.

The Alternatives Chair (Alexandra Fouquet) and Vice Chair (Bethany Geltner) will select the top films (no more than 5) to be shown before the feature screening. The filmmakers of the top films chosen will be contacted before the event. However, the two winners will only be announced after the feature screening. The criteria for selection will be creativity, originality, and integrity.
