Naomi Franquiz’s “Misfit City” Named Entertainment Weekly “Must Have”

Published August 9, 2017

FSU Art BFA ’13 Naomi Franquiz’s work on Misfit City was on Entertainment Weekly’s “Must Have” shortlist! In the print issue of Entertainment Weekly, the editors had this to say while recommending the comic alongside War for the Planet of the Apes and The Bold Type:

Finally, a Goonies for girls! When a pack of teens discover a treasure map, danger brings out the best in everyone, making Legally Blonde writer Smith’s comic-book debut not one to miss.

A limited series from the BOOM! Box imprint of BOOM! Studios, Misfit City features art by Franquiz and a story by Kurt Lustgarten and Kiwi Smith of aforementioned Legally Blonde fame. The synopsis of the series is as follows:

Nothing’s happened in Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in the 80s … but that’s ancient history. Until one day she and her friends come upon a centuries-old pirate map drawn by someone named Black Mary, and find out there might be some REAL adventure in their tiny town after all!

This is not the first time Franquiz and her collaborators have been on Entertainment Weekly’s radar. They participated in an interview in the lead-up to the premiere issue in May, which can be viewed on EW’s website.

The fourth issue of this limited series is set to go to press on August 16th, 2017, with issues 5 and 6 to follow in September and October. Be sure to pick up your copy of Misfit City #4 at your local comic book store!
