FSU BFA 95' Zoe Charleton in Carried Weight | DCCA

Published April 6, 2016

Carried Weight features the work of four artists: FSU Art BFA 95′ Zoë Charlton, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Xaviera Simmons, and Shoshanna Weinberger. A variety of mediums are represented in this dynamic group exhibition, including video, performance art, drawing, collage, and photography.

The effort of carrying oneself, others, and objects in relation to a landscape is a recurring visual theme present throughout the exhibition. Can what we carry reveal anything about who we are as people and as a culture? Each artist offers a unique perspective on this idea, engaging with issues related to immigration, labor, nomadism, race, and gender.

Zoë Charlton was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at American University in Washington, DC. Her work has been included in national and international group exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Haas & Fischer Gallery in Zurich, and others.
