The Department of Art at Florida State University invites applications for a full-time OPS position, Sculpture Lab Manager, to begin in August 2018.

Responsibilities

Responsible for performing regular maintenance activities, maintenance schedules, safety procedures, repairs and equipment check out for Sculpture Area equipment in coordination with the Studio Equipment Manager.

Trains faculty and students in the safe use of sculpture lab equipment and assists with the use of equipment until user is proficient.  This includes teaching workshops regarding the safe and responsible use of Sculpture Area equipment as needed.

Supervises Graduate Assistants and Work Study employees to coordinate regular cleaning, maintenance schedules and safety procedures for the use of the Sculpture and 3D Labs and equipment.

Consults with the Sculpture Area Head and the Studio Equipment Manager to assess and address sculpture lab needs in the Fine Arts Building and the Carnaghi Arts Building.  This includes assisting the Studio Equipment Manager with installation or fabrication of new sculpture equipment.

Coordinates the use of space within Sculpture and 3D Foundations Labs with the Sculpture Area Head.

Qualifications

High school diploma/equivalent and two years of experience.

(Note: post-high school education may substitute for experience at the equivalent rate).

Knowledge of the safe use, repair, and maintenance of tools typically used in sculpture studios (principally welding, foundry, wood shops).

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; prioritize, organize, and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously; perform accurately in a detail oriented environment; utilize problem-solving and technical skills; and identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe working environment.

Preferred

Familiarity with art based equipment preferred. Please refer to https://art.fsu.edu/programs-2/media-areas/sculpture/  for information about the department’s labs and equipment.

A technician with at least 2 years of experience maintaining equipment and tools in fine art and design laboratories and shops.

A quick learner and good problem solver, who works well with others and independently.

Proficient and knowledgeable regarding equipment in more than two studio areas, with some experience in other areas.

Other Information

This position focuses primarily on the safe and smooth operation of the Sculpture Area labs in of the Department of Art in coordination with the Sculpture Area Head.  The Sculpture Lab Manager will focus on day to day operational needs and the safe and proper management of the equipment and personnel in the Sculpture and 3D Foundations labs in the Fine Arts Building.  Additionally, this position coordinates with the Department Studio Equipment Manager who is responsible for installation and overseeing maintenance of equipment in the Department of Art and the sculpture labs in the Carnaghi Arts Building.
