Professor Carrie Ann Baade presents new exhibition, Sawing a Woman in Half

Published September 3, 2022

La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, CA presents Sawing a Woman in Half, a solo exhibition featuring work by FSU Art Professor Carrie Ann Baade from September 10 – October 1, 2022.

The magic trick of sawing a woman in half is a performance. The illusion of dismembering and re-membering of the female body depends mainly on the contortionist skills of the woman folding herself into a tiny box. She folds and unfolds revealing no marks of the saw on her exposed belly. She stands whole, two parts, and then whole again. All the hard work goes on inside the box.

At the 100-year anniversary of this spectacle I ask: Is the performance of control over a female body only a sublimation, or is the pleasure derived from it symptomatic of un-expiring fetishistic fantasies and related political actions? Is this act of ritualized symbolic dissection, execution, and torture more of a travesty today than it was a century ago?

All the ways I have been wounded
under the knife of examination
under the scrutiny of the gaze aimed at my parts
taking lessons
reconciling truths

I have been cut into parts
by others
contorted myself through acts of self-deception
and discovery
and put myself back together
Alone
