FSU Department of Art announces public art project highlighting sustainable campus infrastructure

The Florida State University Department of Art invites you to the opening reception of Rooting – Branching, a site-specific augmented reality public art project that highlights sustainable infrastructure on campus. Those interested to attend, please meet in front of Strozier Library by the large live oak tree (aka The Love Oak) at 6:30pm on Tuesday, April 18th.

The Rooting-Branching project features artwork by sixteen students, which was produced as creative responses to three remarkable trees on FSU’s campus along with three native fruit and nut trees planted by the participating students and faculty, with support from FSU’s Grounds and Landscaping. The students’ artworks, consist of 3D animated sculptures and digitized performance sequences that will be observed site-specifically by scanning QR codes at designated sites and viewing the creative content through an online augmented reality platform.

Faculty members Katie Kehoe and Keith Roberson with the Department of Art and Andy Opel, with the School of Communications conceived and designed the Rooting-Branching Project with consultation and support from David MacManus, Assistant Manager of FSU’s Grounds and Landscaping and Phoenix Fermin, FSU’s Greenhouse Manager. The three professors were brought together by their shared interest in cross-disciplinary research, experiential learning, and sustainable practices.

This initiative is funded by the Green Fund at FSU Sustainable Campus.
