Florida State University’s Studio Art program proudly celebrates the extraordinary accomplishments of its undergraduate students, who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, intellectual curiosity, and creative innovation through the Honors in the Major (HITM) program. Out of 120 students recognized university-wide for completing this prestigious research track, an impressive eleven hail from Studio Art—nearly 10% of the total cohort. This remarkable representation is a testament to the strength and ambition of the Department of Art’s curriculum and mentorship.
The FSU Honors Program supports students who exhibit the drive, talent, and intellectual potential to pursue transformative research and creative projects. The Honors in the Major pathway allows undergraduates to produce a thesis or capstone project under faculty supervision, fostering a deep engagement with research and studio practice over multiple semesters.
Among the most distinguished graduates this year is Madeleine Harwell, who earned Dual Honors—completing both the University Honors Program and Honors in the Major. This rare and commendable achievement underscores her dedication to academic excellence and creative inquiry.

These students’ projects span a wide range of themes—from personal identity and memory to social critique and environmental awareness—reflecting the depth and diversity of thought fostered by the Studio Art program at FSU.
“Our students are thinkers, makers, and visionaries,” said Professor Carrie Ann Baade. “To see so many artists take on rigorous research and creative inquiry at this level is extraordinary. These are the next generation of culture-shapers.”
Each of these Honors in the Major projects was guided by a faculty mentor, culminating in public presentations and formal theses archived in the university’s digital repository. Their work contributes not only to the field of art but also to the broader scholarly community.
Congratulations to this year’s Studio Art Honors in the Major graduates for pushing the boundaries of research and creativity at FSU.
