Art Alum Chalet Comellas-Baker’s DIY Artist Book Reviewed in the MAPC Journal

FSU Art MFA ’12 Chalet Comellas-Baker’s artist book titled, MANIFESTO: Food was recently reviewed in the Mid America Print Council’s MAPC Journal, which features articles on the contemporary and historical context of printmaking; including essays examining the critical theory related to these media; with reviews of exhibitions and publications.

Tipping Point, Volume 32/33, guest edited by Nicole Geary, focuses on climate change and the ways artists are creating works in print that intersect with climate’s effects on economics, migration, labor, urban and rural development, politics, race, and social justice.

MANIFESTO: Food is a DIY artist book, designed to resemble an IKEA product assembly booklet that functions like a zine. It is prepared to be assembled in the gallery by visitors and is free to whomever takes on that labor.

The project is “a printed version of an ‘IKEA hack’ that provides an opportunity for the viewer to contemplate the political nature of what it means to ‘do It yourself’ and ‘make do’

Chalet Comellas-Baker holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Florida State University and a BFA from The University of Tampa, with a concentration in painting. She has participated in several residencies and received notable awards. Both as a collaborator and an independent artist, her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, and festivals. Currently, she complements her studio work with a curatorial practice at Unrequited Leisure, an artist-run gallery in Nashville, TN, that she founded with artist FSU Art Assistant Professor Clint Sleeper focusing on video and net based art.
