Department of Art / Graduate / Support

Support

The FSU Department of Art assists graduate students financially through a variety of teaching assistantships, graduate assistantships, and other types of support.

Assistantships

The FSU Department of Art is proud to offer all of our graduate Master of Fine Arts students either technical or teaching assistantships.  1st Year students receive a technical assistantship and can switch to a teaching assistantship for their 2nd and 3rd years in the program, where they will gain knowledge in teaching foundation-level and some media courses.  Students must maintain a high level of performance in the program to keep their assistantship status.

Funding and Awards

FSU offers a variety of fellowships and awards through the department and/or through the Graduate School.  Below is a small sample of fellowships, and you can learn more about the first two fellowships on the Graduate School website:

  • Adelaide Wilson Fellowship: Only available to incoming 1st Year students.  Incoming students need to apply to the graduate program by mid-January to be eligible for consideration.  This Fellowship offers $30,000 per calendar year for up to three years.
  • Legacy Fellowship: Only available to incoming 1st Year students.  Incoming students need to apply to the graduate program by mid-January to be eligible for consideration.  This Fellowship offers $10,000 per calendar year for up to three years.
  • Florence Teaching Award: Awarded to graduating 3rd Year students.  An annual Florence, Italy Teaching Fellowship is awarded in concert with FSU International Programs to one outstanding graduating MFA student. The award includes one semester of adjunct teaching in the department prior to teaching art abroad through FSU International Programs.

University fellowships and research awards are available on a competitive basis.  Please see the Graduate School Funding and Awards website for more detailed information.  Fellowships and awards provide support and valuable experience to graduate students.

Financial Aid

All MFA students are offered tuition waivers, though this waiver only covers the cost of tuition and does not cover student and university fees.  FSU also offers graduate students financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, and loans.  Please see the Financial Aid website for more detailed information.
