Ricder Ricardo + Pim Ruby | 2028 MFA Candidates:
Co-Exhibition “On the Rise” opening this month at Fine Arts Building Gallery, Tallahassee, FL.
This exhibition unites two bodies of work exploring identity as a site of tension rather than resolution. Pim Ruby’s paintings navigate the pull between Western skepticism and Eastern spirituality, questioning inherited Thai belief systems—fortune tellers, shrines, unforeseen forces—not to debunk them but to understand the contradictions they leave behind. Ricder Ricardo’s practice occupies a parallel in-between terrain shaped by displacement and intersectionality, where myth and colonial history converge into personal folklore that resists fixed narratives of belonging.
Both treat material as language for these tensions: Ruby through drapery, moving between visibility and doubt; Ricardo through collage and layering, materials bearing traces of erosion that mirror how memory is preserved or overwritten. Where Ruby’s tension plays out within a single self, Ricardo’s unfolds across collective diasporic experience—together suggesting identity as an ongoing negotiation between faith and effort, rupture and resilience.
