Jiha Moon

Associate Professor

Department of Art

Jiha Moon’s work investigates the fluid, multivalent nature of cultural imagery in an era of global movement and exchange. Working across gestural painting, mixed media, ceramic sculpture, and installation, Moon explores shifting identities and the circulation of people, objects, and symbols across cultures. Her practice draws from Eastern and Western art histories, folk traditions, popular culture, and personal narrative, creating hybrid visual languages that are at once playful, critical, and deeply layered.

Moon is a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow and has received numerous awards, including the 2016 Artadia Award, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia’s Working Artist Project fellowship (2013), and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2011). She has participated in residencies at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, MacDowell, Headlands Center for the Arts, Art Omi, Ucross Foundation, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, among others.

Her work is held in major public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Asia Society, the High Museum of Art, the Mint Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Renwick Gallery, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Moon has presented solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, the Taubman Museum, the Mint Museum, and the James Gallery at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her work has been widely reviewed in The New YorkerArtforumArt in AmericaThe New York TimesThe Washington PostHyperallergicArt PapersArt Asia Pacific, and other publications.
