MFA Candidate Spotlight: Audrey McKenzie

College of Fine Arts
I am a printmaker and bookmaker that makes work to explores my experience with depression and suicidal ideation. My practice highlights the parallels between engaging with artist books and discussing suicide, which both challenge expectations. Handling artist books can be intimidating; art isn’t usually meant to be touched, but these books are, even if they get a little damaged. The same applies to conversations about suicide. They’re scary, and you might stumble through them, but pushing past the fear makes those discussions more meaningful and necessary.

My favorite part of FSU has always been the community. I attended FSU for my undergraduate degree as well and the sense of community was a major factor of why I returned. Tenee’ Hart, the MFA Coordinator, does an amazing job creating programming during orientation week that gets incoming and current MFAs interacting. Her efforts create a framework for us to build a vibrant community. And because I have deeper connections with my peers, I have felt comfortable making work that is honest to myself and my experiences.
