Hangout Public Art Competition Open to all Artists
The Hangout, in association with the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach, announces the Second Annual Hangout Public Art Competition. This competition is for a large scale three dimensional sculpture that is site specific and weather friendly.
Judges will be looking for overall artistic quality, conceptualization and innovative use of materials. A $3000 stipend will be awarded for the chosen design and the work will become property of The Hangout upon installation. Because the work will be installed prior to The Hangout Music Festival, the sculpture will be viewed by a large and diverse audience within just a few weeks of installation.
“This is an amazing opportunity for any artist to gain exposure to millions of visitors to the Gulf Coast. We are very fortunate to have progressive minded businesses such as The Hangout who see the importance of public/private art initiatives” Juli Jordan, Visiting Artists and Special Exhibits at Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach.
Last year’s competition was limited to college and university students. BK Hart of Agnes Scott College won the competition with a sculpture entitled “When I Visit Your Home”. The sculpture, made 100 percent of recyclable materials, features a sea turtle swimming over a coral reef, made of the very materials that threaten them. “We decided to open up the competition to everyone after we received numerous requests from artists, and, really, it makes the competition even more interesting” states Jordan.
To participate in the competition submit your contact information to email@example.com with “hangout public art competition” in the subject line by October 14. The Concept Submission is due by November 18 and will include photos of detailed sketches or models of sculpture and a written design concept. The Final Proposal, due by December 16, will consist of a presentation of the artist’s three dimensional model along with installation requirements and site specific reasoning. The winning design will be announced by January 15th 2013.
