“I have been granted the opportunity to work with environmental artist Mary Miss in New York City this summer. I contacted Mary Miss and applied for the internship position with the help of Kenn von Roenn as part of the Public Art & Architectural Art Specialized Studies Program. I will be working with Mary Miss and her studio for six weeks during which I will assist with walks that the studio leads, help research environmental issues, and help with other studio tasks such as website maintenance, documentation, and editing.
The walks the studio organizes feature an artist and a scientist who
speak about a particular environmental issue or theme they deal with in their work. These walks are one of the ways Miss works toward her goal of fostering sustainability through the arts. Her aim is to establish a platform that connects artists with scientists, engineers, urban planners, and people from many other fields to educate the public about current environmental issues and provide a way for artists to take part in addressing these issues.
This internship is the ideal opportunity for me to learn from someone who has been successful in bringing together my two fields of study; the environment and art. Not only will I learn about current environmental issues from professionals, I will also learn how art can be used as a tool for environmental activism.”
