My internship at Student Publications has taught me the ins and outs of event photography and has introduced me to some amazing individuals here on campus. When I began this internship, I was looking for a way to expand my photography portfolio and gain some experience that would aid me as a professional photographer in the future. I saw a flyer advertising a photography internship working for Student Publications here at Florida State University. My primary job would be photographing events around campus, which seemed perfect for a new student trying to get involved. Through this internship I’ve networked with individuals across campus, from students to faculty, and have built a web of connections that will be invaluable to me in the future. I’ve also greatly expanded my collection of event photography, which I am currently adding to a professional online portfolio that I can use for job applications in the future. This internship has taught me how difficult event photography can be due to harsh lighting and crowded situations, but it has also taught me how rewarding it can be. Event photography has given me an opportunity to attend events and meet individuals I would never have met otherwise. I’ve heard incredible speeches, photographed live performances, met directors, composers, and actors, all through this internship.
In the future, I hope to use what I’ve learned in this internship to work towards a position as a professional freelance photographer. The skills I have learned in the Student Publications office, as well as out at events have prepared me for the workplace and have given me the skills necessary to work as a professional photographer. The connections I’ve made with other photographers through this internship have been incredibly rewarding and have provided me with lifelong connections. This internship has taught me so much and has truly prepared me for the future.
