From FSU Art BA ’15 Lauren Schwec: For my summer term, I started an internship with Anthropologie for Visual Display. Anthropologie is a URBN brand, meaning it is owned by the same company as Free People, Urban Outfitters, Terrian and BHLDN a wedding brand. URBN considers itself an innovative specialty retail company which offers a variety of lifestyle merchandise to highly defined customer niches, among these and my favorite Anthropologie.
Anthropologie’s windows displays are what have always gravitated me toward their store. My boss, Liz, explains that the brand is directed toward women wanting a curated mix of clothing, accessories and home décor. The store invites you in with their grand windows, which frame and highlight the merchandise and product. By creating a space that tells a story through placement, color, art and language the store is able to reflects a collection of personal styles in all areas from fashion to art to entertaining.
My first task was getting in The Loop, a program they have for employees to learn about the brand and what is currently going on with the company nationwide. The store is separated into 10 categories. Ambra, currently designed for the preppy girl; Flora and Fern the home décor and garden section; Sita, resort inspired for the feminine girl; Tilda, soft and floral; Society Hill Society, home décor, Sandstone, neutrals and bohemian; Wash-shop, sun faded shade; Wabi Sabi, layers and neutrals; Home punctuations; Bath and Lounge and finally Accessories. My goal is to know these seamlessly.
The sections are critical to understanding the stores set up and overall flow, the placement of the installations and color are all huge contributors to the stores overall success. They must all work together.
Currently we are working on the summer window installation. Using a variety of methods to create the sculpture it is only the beginning but I have high hopes for the outcome. I aim to work my hardest and push myself to my full potential, making careful to take time and attention to detail and work diligently to impress my supervisor. I would like to take this time to investigate the company. The hours are long but I believe will be very rewarding. Depending on my overall pleasure of the internship I would like to be considered for a full time position after I graduate in December.
