FSU Art BA '14 Mari Maki Interning with 621 Gallery
As the Photography Intern at 621, I am held responsible for photographing all events at the gallery and the 621 Annex. The Annex neighbors the gallery and is utilized mostly for First Friday and private events. I am also the administrator for the Facebook pages, where I post events, photos, and organize the pages to best advertise the gallery. Each month when we change exhibiting artist, I take photos of each piece, which is then archived on the Facebook for my boss to refer to. This is important when she is applying for grants since it is a non-profit gallery.
So far, I have been utilizing technical skills such as photo archiving. During each event I take as many photos as possible so I have a selection for the allotted amount that Cynthia, my boss, instructs me to post for that event. I practice editing on all of the photos, and then I select photos that aid viewers in exploring our events, and/or revisiting their experience.
I have benefited most from having to interact with the other Public Relations Interns. It is necessary to communicate and work together to be as productive as possible. We circulate information in order to try to build our community by advertising on the website, Facebook Pages, Railroad Square, and local business. In addition, I worked with the gallery’s store intern by taking photos of each item in 621Stor for an online etsy store.
I recommend this Photography Internship to anyone interested in building experience in shooting event photography. The most challenging, yet rewarding aspect from this experience has been the interaction with people at each event. In order to get good shots, the best approach to others letting you take their photo is by building conversation and comfort, which is easy to create in such a lively, creative environment.
I have already gained so much from 621’s experience. My goals coming into the internship included many of the previous mentioned, photo archiving, editing practice, but what really built my experience and confidence in my work was the hands on, behind the camera action at each event.
