Carmen reports on her current internship:
My average Monday at BowStern begins at 8 a.m. When I get to work, the first thing I do is check my email for feedback or new design assignments from my supervisor or the account managers. Whatever revisions they have suggested for prior designs I begin right away and send back as PDF files as soon as I complete them.
At 9 a.m., I join the rest of the office in the conference room for the weekly morning meeting. This is when we each have the opportunity to let the staff members from all the different departments – web development, social media, account planning, etc. – know when we will be in the office, what we are working on, and whether or not we can help each other on different projects.
After the meeting, at about 9:45 a.m., I get back to my desk and complete whatever revisions I have left over and send them to my supervisor for review. Once they have been okayed I then package all my working files and links and send those to my supervisor–this way the entire design department has the same source files and images for future designs.
For the rest of the day, I continue to check my email for new revision requests and new assignments and work on them according to when the deadlines are. As I work, I send PDFs of the designs to my supervisor for feedback or clarification.
If I ever find myself without an assignment, a rare occurrence, I go to the account managers directly and ask if there is anything I can do to help. If the account managers don’t have anything I can work on, I then ask the social media department if they could use my help. Because I work in such close quarters with the different departments, I have had a very diverse internship experience in marketing, working on everything from graphic design to social media calendars to promotional videos.
From this internship I hope to gain knowledge of the advertising and marketing world and work towards becoming the dynamic, matchless professional I’ve always strived to be.
So far, this internship has been so much more than the basic graphic design work I thought it would be. I am thoroughly enjoying my work environment at BowStern and the friendly, professional culture of the company. And, on top of liking my coworkers, I also love the work I’m doing and seeing it applied to so many different media. I never imagined I would get to play around on iMovie or work on Facebook profile pictures and posts as part of my job. This internship has definitely deepened my love of marketing and my desire to work in the field.
