Tuition is low compared to other nationally recognized summer programs, and there is also considerable financial assistance, especially for students with financial need. 2014 students ranged in age from 20 to 35. Some of our participants are already enrolled in MFA programs and others are advanced undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students working toward admission to top graduate schools. Admission is competitive.

A summer residency at Chautauqua offers a beautiful location on Chautauqua Lake in western New York state, unparalleled resources, deeply committed peers and outstanding resident faculty and visiting artists.

About the summer program:

Chautauqua’s intensive session gives participants maximum time to work in an atmosphere created by highly motivated peers and serious engagement with deeply committed professional artists selected from outstanding art programs nationally.

  • Studios are open 24/7.
  • Resident artist/critics in residence are selected from top art programs nationally. Collectively their work has been included in dozens of major galleries and museums internationally.
  • Every summer 10 contemporary exhibitions are presented in the sevel museum-0quality galleries of the Strohi and Fowler-Kellogg Art Centers. This summer’s exhibitions program includes works by Botero, Goya, Rauschenberg, and Warhol, as well as many contemporary artists.
  • A professional symphony performs three nights each week in our 4,000-seat Amphitheater.
  • Student residents are selected from art programs nationally and internationally, They are extraordinarily motivated and committed to their work.
  • The VACI Visual Arts Lecture Series offers twice-weekly lectures by outstanding artists and other professionals in the field.
  • Nightly performances with popular entertainers and guest artists, and a historic lecture series, often broadcast nationally on NPR, takes place every morning.
  • Chautauqua offers resources not available in other summer art programs. Working alongside participants are apprentices in dance, music, theater, and opera.
