Alum Spotlight: J Woltz (2026 MFA, Studio Art)

College of Fine Arts

J Woltz was recently hired in the Department of Art & Art History at Auburn University as well as accepted into several notable projects and residencies.

J Woltz is an interdisciplinary artist and educator currently serving as an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Art and Art History at Auburn University, where they teach Introduction to Digital Art. Woltz also serves as a Teaching Assistant at Florida State University, where they earned an MFA in Studio Art.

Woltz’s recent work has been invited to Foreign Objekt, a Posthuman Research Residency. Their collaborative film project, The Great Billionaire Purge, developed with Tallahassee-based theater group Mickee Faust, will be screened at Punkfilmfest Berlin. Woltz has also been involved in Fall of Freedom, a film initiative presented in collaboration with the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Canyon Cinema.

Working across video, sculpture, performance, drag, puppetry, sound, and installation, Woltz constructs absurd and often grotesque fictional worlds that examine how power operates through spectacle, consumption, political performance, and the construction of the monstrous. Combining handmade environments, fabricated media, camp, horror, and humor, their practice explores the instability between performance and reality, control and resistance, and the figures society designates as monstrous or other.
