Alum Spotlight: Sharon Norwood (MFA 2018, Studio Art)

College of Fine Arts
Sharon Norwood’s work is part of “After the Island: Caribbean Canadian Ceramics” at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, Ontario.

“After the Island: Caribbean Canadian Ceramics”, represents a landmark exhibition exploring contemporary ceramic practices rooted in Caribbean histories, memory, and cultural transformation. The curatorial partnership between the Gardiner Museum, Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue (BAND) and the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is presented across two exhibitions and two cities—Toronto and San Francisco—and brings together artists whose work examines migration, ornament, labour, ancestry, and the enduring impact of Caribbean cultural traditions across generations and geographies.

At the Gardiner Museum, “After the Island: Caribbean Canadian Ceramics” connects four Canadian artists with roots in the Caribbean—PJ Anderson, Eddy Firmin, Manuel Mathieu, and Sharon Norwood—who use clay to explore what our bodies inherit, protect, and carry forward. Their work all challenges the idea of the island as isolated and self-contained, tracing connections across the region’s histories and geographies.

At MoAD, “After the Island: Ornament and Ceramic Practice in the Jamaican Diaspora” focuses on artists whose practices engage Jamaica as memory, inheritance, orientation, and cultural touchstone.

Opening Reception Thursday, October 8, 2026, 7:30 – 9:00 pm
