Moey Hewitt, FSU Art MFA Alum ‘26, was an Artist in Residence at Byrdcliffe in Woodstock, NY!
During my time at Byrdcliffe, I was able to expand upon my practice by getting to know the local landscape of a region much different from Florida. Every day I would climb the trail up Mount Guardian, examining plants and trees that were foreign to me. I learned about native species as well as species that are invasive to the area, and I began incorporating these into my sculptural drawings. This experience broadened my practice by extending my materials-based research to plants and trees that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to in my home state.
I also was amongst a wonderfully talented group of visual artists, writers and musicians, who all came together to take part in practice shares, social events and dinners. The sense of community built at Byrdcliffe was super special, inspiring, and something I will always remember.
Byrdcliffe’s Artists-in-Residence program is open to all artists working in all disciplines. Visual arts, photography, ceramics, film making, writing, composers, weaving, and multi-disciplinary. The primary criteria is a demonstrated commitment to the artist’s field of endeavor.
