Teaching Artist Residency at the Thomasville Center for the Arts

Published May 5, 2016

Our partnership with Thomasville City School System is driven by a shared vision to fully integrate the arts into the school curriculum and lay the foundation for an innovative future for Thomasville’s education system. After three years of development, in the fall of 2016, we will launch a groundbreaking arts education integration program in the neighboring elementary school along with flex scheduling, distance learning, and fine arts expansion in the middle and high schools. Our partnership was enhanced last year with the addition of ArtsNow who, in addition to their experience in organizational planning, whole-school transformation, research and evaluation, is providing the design of learning frameworks and foundational training to our instructors.

While programming of this caliber is unique in a community of our size, what makes this program even more compelling is another layer of work designed to develop artists and arts educators who can carry this program forward. Early in the development phase, we recognized the absence of experienced teaching artists. To address this need, we turned to our existing adult artists in residence program originally designed to provide visiting artists time to produce and present new works. This season we will transform this program into a Teaching Artistry Residency program to provide arts integration and fine arts instruction training to our residents who will gain experience teaching in the school program.
