Savannah Chase: Summer 2011 Internship

Published August 30, 2011

“This summer I had the opportunity to work as a graphic design intern at a creative consulting firm here in Tallahassee. Onyx Group was my top choice firm from the beginning of the application process, so being selected as their first design intern ever was quite the honor. Onyx Group specializes in marketing and business strategy that is preceded by much research and then implemented with business plans and any relevant digital and design elements. If I could sum it up in my own words, I would say that Onyx Group takes a business and helps them become all that they can be, accessing any means or media that they see fitting for that particular business. If you are just looking for specifics for future internship prospects, then yes, they do websites, logos and collateral design.

One thing that I loved about interning at Onyx was the opportunity to be involved as much (or as little) as I wanted to be. Nadia Kamal, one of the principals at Onyx, repeatedly stated that ”this internship is what you make of it.” Being the assertive little minion that I am, I ended up participating in other sides of the strategic process by helping out with client and prospective client interviews, reading through pages of organizational findings, and reviewing radio and t.v. commercials to give feedback. During the internship, I even organized what we called ”coffee breaks with the interns” where, over the course of the internship, we sat each member of Onyx staff down and asked them every question we could possibly think of to ensure that we knew EEEEEEVERYTHING there was to know about the firm and the industry in general. (Ok, so maybe we still have more to learn). Onyx Group is a highly collaborative environment, so being able to be a part of the whole process was certainly attainable. Sometimes, all you have to do is ask.

I really loved working at Onyx this summer. I highly recommend applying for those looking for a great local opportunity. I guess I should mention that I did lots of actual graphic design work including branding, logos, web design, collateral design, and layout design. The excitement for me, however, was getting to be a part of the bigger picture.

For those of you considering Onyx Group, I will leave you with some insight:

The entire creative team works remotely. They are NOT in the office. In fact, you will be lucky if you actually get to meet them in person (which I was fortunate enough to get to do!). You will be working in office with the art director via Skype. This means that self-motivation is key. Initiative is key. Communication skills are key.

Onyx is passionate about what they do. Passion is key.

You will be participating in social media galore! Social Networking is key. Get a Twitter YESTERDAY.

You will be featured in online videos and blogs sporadically through out your internship. Come to the office with your hair did. Drink your coffee. Energy and Enthusiasm are key.

If you have any further questions, you may feel free to email me at srw06d@fsu.edu. Make sure to check out my blog post on the Onyx website!”
