The Department of Art is a research driven community of ambitious students and respected faculty dedicated to the dynamic interrelationship of ideas, processes, and practices. Studio Art and Design at Florida State emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking and offers diverse opportunities for creative development and expression on both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Students have access to cutting edge and state of the art equipment, software, and techniques to best provide them with the needed skills and expertise in various media. The Department of Art is committed to excellence in all programs, the program strives to combine curricular flexibility with a rigorous mix of experiences and opportunities for serious, focused study in art and design.

The Undergraduate Program

The Department of Art offers the following undergraduate degree programs: Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Studio Art and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art. The limited access BFA programs are available to those students already pursuing a BA in Studio Art. Course selection encompasses history, theory, and practice. Studies may include ceramics, electronic media, design, drawing, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Each degree program mandates specific entry requirements, a certain sequence of courses, and graduation requirements.

The Graduate Program

In the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree program, graduates may pursue studies in either a studio or digital media area. Course selection encompasses history, theory, and practice. Studies may include ceramics, electronic media, drawing and painting, installation, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Depending upon personal development, graduate students may choose to work in a variety of media or to concentrate in an area of interest.
