News from Emily James, FSU Art Alum and Dean’s Advisory Board Member

Published August 13, 2012

Happy August to all,

I’ll begin with a “multi-generational” beach scene… Over 20 years ago a friend in Atlanta, Deanne, asked me to join her and her granddaughters on Marco Island.

This is a photo I took of her grandchildren then,
and if you’ve been to my studio, you’ve heard me tell how they threw their towels down and designed my painting, “Happy Days”, which won the Suncoast Watercolor award…

Deanne called to say they had bought a beach place near Vero, and wanted a 7′ over-the-sofa painting of her now great-granddaughters from each of the 2 girls above. I painted it in an impressionistic style as the 2 girls are only 6 months and 1, so I aged them a bit, and if you’ll refer to the first photo above, you’lI see I dressed them in the bathing suits their moms had on 20+ years earlier…

Next, a request from Mary Hamilton to paint the Morris Island lighthouse to present to her great reconstructive surgery doctor for his T.L.C.  Because of new jetties and shifting sands, the South Carolina lighthouse, originally built in 1867, is now 1200′ from shore.

Away from the shore, a couple of paintings of the picturesque setting in front of the home of Jim and Cheri Cassady in Tallahassee…

If you came to my seminar, here is the finished piece from the demonstration…

And couple of refreshing creekside scenes installed in a home’s niche’s…

Back to the beach, here are a couple of seascapes recently completed for the lobby of The Gramercy…

John and I saw this sunset one night, and I just had to paint it…

In closing, a little known fact… you may know I have 5 precious grandchildren, but DID YOU KNOW that I have 4 grandchickens? Yes indeed, and they reside in the backyard in fashionable Mid-town Atlanta, where they produce organic eggs daily for our daughter Mary and hubby Chris…

I hope you are having a wonderful summer! Emily

Ps. Currently on the easel, a seascape of the Naples pier with 84 people to date!
