The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the annual “Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award” program in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and to encourage their continued commitment to the field. It was also designed to draw attention to the sculpture programs of the participating universities, colleges and art schools. The award program’s growing publicity resulted in an exceptional number of participating institutions; including over 151 universities, colleges and art school sculpture programs from six countries for a nominated total of 374 students.

A distinguished panel made up of Kathryn Mikesell, Founder of the Fountainhead Residency and Studios, Miami, FL; Stefano Catalani, Director of Art, Craft & Design at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, WA; and Donald Lipski, Sculpture, NY selected 22 recipients and 25 honorable mentions through a competitive viewing process of the works submitted. The selection of the recipients from a large pool of applicants, including international students, is a great accomplishment testament to the artistic promise of the students’ work.

The 22 award recipients will participate in the Grounds For Sculpture’s Fall/Winter Exhibition, which will be on view from October 2014 – March 2015 in Hamilton, New Jersey, adjacent to the ISC headquarters. The artist’s work will be featured in the October 2014 issue of the International Sculpture Center’s award winning publication, Sculpture magazine, as well as on the ISC’s award-winning International Sculpture Center website.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) is a member-supported, non-profit organization founded in 1960 to champion the creation and understanding of sculpture and its unique, vital contribution to society. Members include sculptors, collectors, patrons, architects, developers, journalists, curators, historians, critics, educators, foundries, galleries, and museums – anyone with an interest in and commitment to the field of sculpture. Please visit the International Sculpture Center website for further details.

Since graduating, Craig Ryan has moDesigned by Craig Ryanved to New York City to further his career endeavors. He describes his time in New York since Graduation:

“I live and work in Manhattan. Currently I am working with Peter Callahan (http://www.petercallahan.com) as Manager of Warehouse and Fabrication in Chelsea. It’s a high end catering company that does custom designing for each event. It is mainly props and trays, but I have experience in digital fabrication and hope to incorporate more of those influences. Recently we printed custom cookie cutters. While a cookie cutter isn’t exciting to most people, it makes a big difference for a client. This business is about creating an experience, and if you’ve seen my work, you’ll know why I’m interested in working here.

Half of my job is research and through that, I know the best places to buy materials. These people know me by name. I also have access to a studio and tools. I’m currently planning my next projects and will be applying to residencies shortly. I recently found that I was a recipient of International Sculpture Center’s 2014 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. An exhibition will be held in October and I will be in the October edition of Sculpture Magazine. Needless to say my transition to NYC has been best-case scenario.”
