Published May 12, 2011

Title:

Call to Artists

Opportunity

SCULPTURE EXHIBITION 2011-2012
CALL TO ARTISTS
DEADLINE AUGUST 15,2011

McKee Botanical Garden is an 18-acre subtropical hammock with a nearly 80-year history as one of Florida’s most enchanting and educational attractions. Its continued preservation is crucial to the cultural, historical and environmental growth of thousands of visitors each year. More than just a ‘gardener’s garden,’ McKee attracts children, artists, historians, photographers, wildlife experts, yogis, writers, tourists, school groups and even model train enthusiasts. The mission of McKee is “to nurture and enhance a historic garden in a unique tropical setting for the education, enjoyment and enrichment of all.” This objective has allowed us to celebrate our remarkable past, while looking forward to an even more extraordinary future.

Work Media:
In addition to preserving history through its restored architecture, McKee Botanical Garden is influencing the future of the art world through its innovative cultural exhibits. Many of our previous exhibits have incorporated artists who previously had not shown in an outdoor botanical setting, but who subsequently booked years in advance at similar sites around the country. Previous exhibits have included 30 life-sized, realistic dinosaurs by nationally known artist Guy Darrough of Lost World Studios; a collection of blown-glass sprites, flowers and cubes from world-renowned artist Hans Godo Fräbel; and three-dimensional sculptures of some of Dr. Seuss’s most beloved characters, crafted by the same artist – Leo Rijn – who created many of the small-scale works at Universal Studios’ Seuss Landing.

The Garden plans to build on this impressive legacy in 2011 with a sculpture exhibit that invites visitors into an outdoor world of movement and sound. In selecting entries for our 2011 Sculpture Exhibit, emphasis will be placed on artwork that reinvents common perceptions of trees, flowers, ponds, birds, sky and other natural garden elements. Special consideration will be given to extremely large-scale sculptures that incorporate movement, light, sound or water. Artwork may be pendant or freestanding and designed for land, air or aquatic display. When choosing submissions, please keep in mind sculptures will be shown outdoors and should be of a substantive size and impact to complement these surroundings.

McKee Botanical Garden will select up to 50 sculptures for display in its 2011 Sculpture Exhibit. Each selected artist will receive a $500 stipend upon receipt of sculpture, as well as the chance to win cash prizes for first, second, third and visitors’ choice awards. Additionally, the artist will receive invaluable exposure to the thousands of visitors – and potential buyers – who come to McKee each year. We hope you will consider joining us as an exhibitor this season by filling out the application below. To learn more about McKee, please visit our website at www.mckeegarden.org.
