Jess Drawhorn: 621 Summer Internship

Published September 1, 2011

“621 Gallery, located in Railroad Square Art, is one of the largest and most active art galleries in Tallahassee. 621 has a close relationship with the Department of Art at Florida State, often hosting student shows and hiring students as volunteer interns.

I volunteered at 621 this summer and my duties included writing a Wikipedia page for the gallery, helping install and take down the monthly shows, organizing administrative files, photographing art work, and helping with Camp 621.

One of the most valuable tasks I took on this summer was actually going through back files. I spent about a week organizing folders of artists who had previously submitted artist statements and examples of work to be considered for a show at the gallery. Glancing through hundreds of artists statements taught me so much about the way people write about their work, and gave me some great ideas about my own writing.

I really enjoyed my internship. I was able to work on tasks that I enjoyed doing, and Cynthia Hollis, the
Gallery Director, was happy to let me get my work done in any way that worked best for me.

621 has internships that relate to a variety of fields, including Graphic Design, Art Administration, and Public Relations. Applications can be found on the 621 website.”
