Gadsden Arts Center’s Summer Art Camp Seeking Artists

Published June 15, 2015

The Gadsden Arts Center’s summer art camp program has just begun, and we’re looking for artists who might be interested in volunteering some time to do a demonstration for the campers. Last summer, the campers got to pull strings of glass from a small kiln, watched an artist assemble a stained glass piece, explored blown ink on yupo, made small batiks, and more.

Summer Art Camp reaches a wide section of our community, including those that may not normally have the ability to learn about art. We work hard to fundraise and bring students to camp who may not be able to attend otherwise. 31 out of 58 campers are on some form of scholarship (16 on full 7-week scholarship).

Gadsden County is unfortunately one of the counties where arts have been removed from nearly all the schools–none in elementary schools and in middle and high schools the arts teachers are also teaching humanities and reading classes. The campers are ages 6-12, split into two classes.

We would love to have more artists do short (30-60 minute) demos with the campers, and I was wondering if you knew any students or other artists who might be interested. Last year we had one per week, but haven’t had as much luck this year. Dates for demos are below, and the theme words are intended to be broad so our instructors can take a variety of media and do projects to talk about the theme, so presentations can very loosely connect to the themes.
