Panel Discussion: Shooting for the Stars: Starting on the Path to Success in Academia
Friday November 9th at 9:00 am at the Society for Photographic Education Southeast (SPESE) conference in Daytona Beach Fl

Panelists: George Blakely, Justin James Reed, Kathleen Robbins

This panel is a discussion about navigating the path to successful placement in academia. The moderator will pose questions pertinent to an audience seeking a  start and/or a more permanent position in academia. With a growing number of M.F.A. candidates on the streets and fewer jobs to find, how does one attempt to approach the field? Learn expectations of veteran faculty when hiring young faculty into a tenure position, full time position, or adjunct position. The talk will touch on how to best prepare for C.A.A., putting together a teaching packet and preparing for a successful interview. The panel will be open to questions from the audience. The purpose of this panel is to create a dialogue and uncover some of the mystery surrounding the process of successful career placement in higher education.

The panelists selected have a range of academic and artistic experience.
Rebecca Nolan:
Rebecca Nolan is the current Chair of Photography at SCAD where she has been a professor for ten years. Prior to moving to Savannah, Nolan taught at Washington University, St. Louis and the University of Kentucky, Lexington. As a working artist she explores community, regional culture and their significance to the landscape.

George Blakely:
George Blakely has been a Professor at Florida State University since 1978.
He is an internationally exhibited artist with over three hundred exhibitions. He has lectured about his art and research at over seventy venues including universities, museums, galleries and conferences across the country. Blakely has curated three major exhibitions“Heartfelt” proceeded by “BANG” The gun as Image” and “Appetite”.

Justin James Reed:
Justin James Reed’s work and artist’s books have been exhibited extensively. He is a member of the international artists collective, Piece of Cake, and an Assistant Professor of Art Foundation and Photography & Film at Virginia Commonwealth University. He lives in Richmond, Virginia.

Kathleen Robbins:
Kathleen Robbins is coordinator of the photography program and affiliate faculty of the southern studies at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Robbins received her BA in Studio Art from Millsaps College in 1998 and her MFA from the University of New Mexico in 2001. Her photographs have been exhibited widely in venues such as the Ping Yao Photography Festival, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Mississippi Museum of Art.
