Interning with Lisa Thompson at North Florida Community College (NFCC) has been a great experience. I have gotten the opportunity to assist her with helping students with their technique, clarification of assignments, suggestions for concepts, and promoting student
input with prompting questions during critiques.
A challenge for me has been returning to the NFCC Art Studio as an intern and not being a student on campus. It has been strange to be in a different role. A really cool part of my experience is working with students that were high school students when I subbed at Taylor County High School. It is great to have them in a class again but as young adults.
My most memorable part of my internship has been watching students overcome the anxiety of ”not being good” or ”not being artists” and creating some beautiful works. For many of these students, art is becoming a means of expression rather than an obstacle. To watch that transition has been awesome.
I highly recommend this internship for anyone wanting to teach art. It is a great way to pass on what you are learning at FSU to community college students.
