A fellow FSU alum told me, when she worked in the IAC building (InterActiveCorp’s headquarters in NY), that the third floor smelled like a boys dorm room. She said the floor housed both CollegeHumor and Jax Media. That night I went on Jax Media’s website to see if there were any opportunities. Not because of the promised smell, but because I never thought about applying at a production company or knew how involved they were. They produce Broad City, which is currently in production, and Inside Amy Schumer, among many other projects. I find these two shows incredibly important in reshaping the landscape of gender politics in our society, and would kill to be involved in their production (but luckily didn’t have to). The website said they were hiring interns. A resume, cover letter and phone interview later, I was their latest hire!

I currently work three days a week with 8 other interns and our tasks go from coffee runs, to helping out at casting, to writing our own 6 episode series. Luckily for me, I’m the only one with an art background, so the art department has given me some incredible opportunities. My first week, I designed a tattoo for a dream sequence to go on Abbi’s shoulder in Broad City season 2. Week 2 I designed a movie poster to set dress a scene at a theatre, and these past 2 weeks, I’ve been designing stickers for more set design that will be sprinkled all over wherever a logo needs covering or a boring refrigerator surfaces (all for Broad City, which is an incredible show that everyone should be watching).

I won the coveted 'intern of the week' my first week, and my prize was this photo (amazing) In the background you can see the tattoo i designed, although it's really washed out to keep up some suspense for when the episode airs

Within the internship, my goal is to work hard and stand out enough to earn a job as a Production Assistant or Art Department Assistant once I’ve graduated in a year. My long-term goals beyond that are to become a comedy writer/performer based in New York driving forward the social change needed in gender politics.

So far I have learned so much, the most important of which being that I’m sure I’m on the right track to making my goals and aspirations a reality. Jax Media is an incredible place to work and I couldn’t be happier or better suited anywhere else.
