FSU Art Assistant Professor Rob Duarte: Visiting Artist at Penland School of Crafts

Published April 7, 2014

Rob Duarte, Assistant Professor in Art, traveled to the Penland School of Crafts as a Visiting Artist for a letterpress animation workshop. The 8-week intensive workshop is being led by artist Rory Sparks and focuses on the use of low-tech methods of combining letterpress printing and frame-by-frame animation. Rob visited during week 4 to discuss the students’ projects and to introduce them to techniques for using sound. He also worked with Rory and her students to develop an animation-displaying machine that each student will construct. The machines are built by combining custom digital electronics, bookbinding box-making techniques, and inspiration from primitive animation devices such as phenakistoscopes and praxinoscopes. Rob will continue to work with the workshop participants on the project by mailing packages back and forth between Tallahassee, FL and Penland, NC.
