Florida State University’s Billion Dollar Campaign Kick-Off: Arts Integration & Collaboration

Published October 28, 2014

Raise the TorchOn October 17th, 2014, Florida State University’s Billion Dollar Campaign Kick-Off event took place at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. This prestigious gala marked the beginning of the second half of the campaign to raise a billion dollars. One thousand guests were invited to the exciting event.

The entertainment was provided by FSU students, alumni and faculty and the FSU Jazz Big Band played from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. during the cocktail reception. Throughout the evening, Nick Schilz, Chelsea Harris and Jamie Nelson created and completed a collaborative painting incorporating the theme “Raise the Torch.”

Nick Schilz is a second year graduate student at FSU. He is pursuing his Master of Fine Arts with a concentration on Painting and Drawing. He cites his experience working on murals and other larger-sized paintings and drawings as influencing his selection for this project.

Chealsea Harris, a second year Art Therapy graduate student, was also selected. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a concentration in Drawing. As president of the FSU Art Therapy Association (ATA), Chelsea was selected for the fundraiser in order to promote art therapy.

Another second year Art Therapy graduate student, Jamie Nelson, also participated. Jamie is a second time Seminole, graduating from FSU with a degree in Family and Child Sciences and a minor in Psychology. Jamie’s interest in experimentation with different artistic media as well as her positions on the student board of the Florida Art Therapy Association and in FSU ATA as Public Relations Officer made her an excellent candidate for this project. Here’s what she had to say about the event:
It was such a beautiful and elegant event… a wonderful tribute to Florida State’s art community. Patrons of the campaign were invited to participate in the completion of the torch painting that myself, Chelsea and Nick arranged. With this painting, several prominent guests added their signature marks to the final piece such as Dr. Garnett Stokes, the Interim President. She was quite enthusiastic about the collaboration and the overall integration of the arts.
– Jamie Nelson, Art Therapy & Family & Child Sciences graduate student

The Department of Art Education is so pleased to have been involved in the the Billion Dollar Campaign Kick-Off event and looks forward to future collaborations.
