Faculty Position in Photography at UA

The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Alabama invites applications for a full-time, nine-month position for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art in Photographic Arts, beginning fall semester, 2017.

The successful candidate shall demonstrate commitment to teaching excellence, creative activity and scholarship, and university and community service. The Department of Art and Art History especially values the importance of a diverse and inclusive community; minorities, women and/or those who identify as LGBTQ, are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will be an important team member of the photography program, an evolving media area within an exciting, dynamic department. The photography program covers a full range of historical and contemporary practices in the photographic arts. The candidate shall be fluent in both analog (darkroom) and digital approaches and be current with theoretical and conceptual concerns. While a broad range of skills is required, one or more of the following focus areas are especially sought: alternative or historical processes, social-based practices, interdisciplinary and collaborative practices, site-specific or installation art, documentary, or other. The candidate should be committed to all levels of teaching from introductory to graduate levels. The candidate will be a member of the wider department graduate faculty, and should be capable of teaching and mentoring graduate students of varied disciplines.

Importantly, the candidate will conduct a program of creative research and production that can build towards tenure.

Other responsibilities include: participation in departmental duties such as student advising and mentorship; program assessment and management; service to departmental, college and university committees; and participation in community outreach and program recruitment.

Required qualifications
• Master of Fine Arts degree in the Photographic Arts or related field
• Minimum two years of university or college-level teaching experience beyond graduate student teaching
• Evidence of active exhibition record and scholarship.
• Demonstrated excellence and recognition of dynamic ongoing creative research that can build towards tenure.
• Evidence of success in college/university teaching in the Photographic Arts
