BFA in Design

Please Note

(Updated August 21, 2012)  FSU's Department of Art is no longer accepting students into the BFA Design degree program.  All current BFA Design students are expected to graduate by Spring 2014.

This degree has been merged with the BFA Studio Art program.  All of our previous design and digital media courses are still being offered (with an expansion on digital media), and students will still complete 51 credit hours of studio art credit under the BFA Studio Art degree program.  Only the degree title has changed.

If you have any questions about these changes, please review the posted FAQs document below.  If you still have questions not answered in this document, please contact advisor Sara Howard (sshoward@admin.fsu.edu) and chair of the department, Carolyn Henne, at chenne@fsu.edu.

BFA in Design

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Design is a one hundred-twenty (120) credit hour limited access program that provides a more intensive background in professional skills and theoretical knowledge. BFA students will develop a personal vision, a high level of competence in technique, and harness the ability to make sound artistic decisions. The BFA in Design is a proficiency-based program, characterized by continuous assessment. The program is only available to FSU art students.

Accepted students will have the opportunity to request personal studio space in the BFA Warehouse, where they can exhibit their work in a public gallery space. Additionally, graduating BFA seniors exhibit their work at FSU's Museum of Fine Art in their last semester.

Program Requirements

To receive a degree in BFA Design, students must successfully complete one hundred-twenty (120) credit hours. The credit hours will be divided between:

  • sixteen (16) credit hours in Foundations courses
  • thirty-six (36) credit hours in liberal studies
  • fifty-one (51) credit hours of studio/design courses (incorporating two focus areas, GRA2190C, DIG3025, and DIG4830)
  • twelve (12) credit hours of art history (ARH3056, ARH3057, DIG3025, DIG4830)
  • at least (5) credit hours in electives

Students admitted to the BFA program are exempt from the foreign language requirement. The BFA advisor can provide additional guidance with regard to entrance and degree requirements.

Program Information

In order to apply to the BFA Design program, students must have completed sixteen (16) credit hours of Foundations courses and have completed or currently be enrolled in Graphic Design I (GRA2190C), and Design History & Theory (DIG3025). Visit the BFA Design Application Information page for portfolio submission. Students may apply during the fall and spring semesters. Acceptance is based on portfolio review by the faculty. The BFA Design program requires that students successfully complete two focus areas and take the BFA Design Seminar (DIG4830) their final semester.
