Swoon to visit FSU in October

Acclaimed graffiti artist Swoon comes to FSU October 24-29 to work with FSU graduate students as the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance Ben Bivins Scholar for 2011. She will also give a public lecture in the William Johnston Building Room 2005 on Oct 27, 2011 at 7:00 PM.

Swoon, whose given name is Caledonia Curry, is a Brooklyn-based artist whose life-sized woodblock and cut-paper portraits hang on walls in various states of decay in cities around the world. Although Swoon’s aesthetics can be seen as an out growth of street art, her engagement with ethical living and artmaking share a close kinship with the idealism of off-grid, barter-based cultures and economies based on sharing. She uses scavenged and local materials and embraces print media as a potent means of action for social change.

Members of FSU’s League of Graduate Artists will work with Swoon to benefit the Tallahassee community by enhancing, expanding and beautifying an outdoor space at the rear of the Shelter, a nonprofit homeless center on Tennessee Street. The Shelter has seen its population surge during the last few years, and Swoon’s project will be designed to allow it to offer space to more residents. This project will give the students a chance to work closely with an acclaimed artist, see her process, and collectively use the talent and energy of the group to help a great organization.
